Weeki Wachee Springs State Park

A really unique place to visit for your vacation from Tampa Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, which is famous for its live mermaid shows. The shows have been a tradition in the park since the 1950s. It’s also fun to experience kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and fishing charters when you visit Weeki Wachee. It takes just over an hour to get to the park from Tampa. When you make this trip, it’s easy to combine Weeki Wachee with a visit to the historic sponge docks at Tarpon Springs and see some manatees in their natural habitats nearby.

It’s even home to one of the state’s most unique wineries. The National Navy SEAL Museum, located along the oceanfront, also provides a unique glimpse into the elite military operation with exhibits, artifacts, weapons and vehicles on display.

For the ultimate in Florida’s small-town beach escapes, take a trip to Matlacha, located just under three hours from Tampa. This tiny town is colorful and welcoming, from its art gallery and gardens to its lively boat tours that allow visitors to get an up-close glimpse of dolphins and whales. There’s also an inlet where you can go kayaking or paddle boating, or you can rent a bicycle and ride down the Calusa Heritage Trail. Just a little over three hours from Tampa, St. Augustine is another beautiful coastal city loaded with things to see and do. It is claimed to be the oldest city in the country, so there is plenty of history to explore here including the Old Jail, the Fort Matanzas National Monument and the Mission of Nombre de Dios. But, that’s just the beginning because you can also visit the World Golf Hall of Fame and Museum, visit an alligator farm, sample some spirits at a distillery, take a living history tour and visit the Ripley’s Believe It or Not Odditorium. Of course, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the water too, like setting out on a fishing charter, taking a biplane ride or even going on an airboat safari.

Amelia Island is located four hours from Tampa and is popular for its quiet beaches and luxurious resorts. If you have a little more time for your vacation, consider going four hours southeast of Tampa to visit Everglades National Park. This is a protected region that is home to many plant and animal species that are stunning to observe and admire. Go for a hike along the boardwalks in the park to get a safe, yet up-close, look at the unique waterways. It’s also possible to take a ranger-led canoe tour, give birdwatching a try with some binoculars, or kayak around the islands to immerse yourself in the nature of the park. To extend your stay in the national park, there are two drive-in campgrounds where you can stay overnight with your RV. Wilderness camping is also available on beach sites and elevated platforms, but you will need to get a permit and be prepared to access your site via canoe, kayak, motorboat, or on foot.

This South Florida destination is about four and a half hours from Tampa, so you might want to plan this getaway for a long weekend or weeklong stay. Top things to do in Tallahassee include the observation platform of the capitol building, the Tallahassee Museum, and the Tallahassee Antique Car Museum.
