There are lots of different ways to experience our nation’s capital, but if you’re looking to be in a hip area and have a unique D.C. experience, Airbnb is definitely the way to go. There’s a popular Airbnb property in the Shaw neighborhood that’s perfect for big groups and an actual firehouse filled with a fascinating history. The Firehouse on R was home to the first fully African-American fire company in Washington, D.C., and is now available as a vacation rental for up to 14 people.
This authentic firehouse was built in 1884 and totally renovated in 2017 by a TV celebrity and famous interior designer. It was also featured on Netflix’s “Stay Here” in season one, episode eight of the show. With this Airbnb rental, you’ll have about 3,000 square feet of space that includes five bedrooms, eight beds, and four bathrooms. The space is filled with exposed brick and wood beams, with lots of amenities to enjoy as well.
But what makes this vacation rental so unique is all the historic artifacts and firehouse-style touches. There is an original fire pole in the unit, lots of historic photos on display, and artifacts so you can learn a little history during your stay. It’s such a cool environment to be in and also comfortable with all the modern conveniences you need. Small company retreat groups and gatherings of friends love it here.
This rental home comes with Wi-Fi, Netflix, cable TV, laundry machines, and parking for two cars. There are outside cameras for perimeter surveillance and easy access to the trash and recycling cans. Guests access the rental space via lockbox and with a code. At the discretion of the owner, guests may get access to the roof deck on the building as well.
However, one big rule to keep in mind when you rent this space is that no parties are allowed. The property is for residential living only and not for inviting big groups of guests over to hang out. The bedrooms inside the home have a mix of queen-size beds, single beds, a toddler bed, a baby travel crib, and a sofa bed in the living room. Other perks of staying here are the city skyline view, air conditioning, heating, indoor fireplace, dedicated workspace, and kitchen.
Long-term stays of 28 days or more are allowed here if you plan to spend an extended time in D.C. But no matter how long you stay, this is a great area to be in because the home is in a historic district filled with Black history museums, restaurants, and bars. It also offers easy access to the yellow and green line trains, which pick up just a block east of the home. You’ll be in a very walkable neighborhood with everything just 10 blocks away or less. The local grocery store is about four blocks away, and DCA National Airport isn’t too far away either.
