This Famous Texas Bakery Serves Some of The Best Kolaches Around

The town of West, Texas has been designated as the “Home of the Official Kolache of the Texas Legislature,” and one of the best places to get a kolache here is Czech Stop and Little Czech Bakery. A kolache is a Czech pastry filled with either fruit or cheese and meats. Czech Stop has been making these delectable pastries, along with sandwiches and other baked goods, since 1983. If you’re on Interstate 35 and passing through West, a stop at this deli, bakery and convenience store is a must.

Texas is rich in Czech heritage, and this is why the kolache has become a popular treat among Texans. The Czech Stop remains busy as Texas’ obsession with kolaches remains. According to a poster inside the store, Czech Stop uses over 750 gallons of milk, 9,000 pounds of flour, and 2,500 pounds of American cheese each week to produce its baked goods.

Now you’re probably wondering why this little rest stop uses so much product, and that is because Czech Stop never closes. This local joint serves hungry travelers, college students, and loyal locals no matter what time of day.

As mentioned, kolaches are king here. Patrons can get all types of kolaches from cream cheese filling to a variety of fruit fillings to kolaches filled with sausages, American cheese or ham. However kolaches aren’t the only baked goods coming out of Czech Stop. If you can pry yourself away from a soft and doughy kolache, try Czech Stop’s brownies, pies, cookies or even take a sandwich to go.

For over 30 years, Czech Stop has not once closed its doors, even when the small town of West experienced a massive explosion by a nearby fertilizer plant. During that time, Czech Stop served up free food and drinks to first responders, and continued to churn out it’s delicious baked treats. It’s safe to say that this bakery, deli and gas station is a prominent local fixture in this central Texas town.
